The Importance of Skin Toner
The other day, one of my favorite clients was talking about the products she uses. We went over everything, she uses a great cleanser twice a day, an exfoliator every other day, a day cream and a night cream, she seemed proud of the care she took for her skin (and I was proud of her as well). However, when I asked her if she used a toner, her response was "I heard toners don't really do anything." I was a little in shock, because every skin care product has a purpose and a toner can help much more then you may think.
Skin toner is extremely important for our skin, and a step most people skip. When we think about getting ready for bed we cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, put products on, then sleep. However, after exfoliating….tone. Toner is a lotion/wash that cleanses skin and shrinks the appearance of pores.
Your skin has a pH level. Too little oil and you have dry skin, too much oil and you’ve got oily skin. pH is measured from 1 to 15. 7 is neutral, 1-6.9 is acidic (dry), and 7.14 is alkaline (oily). Between between 4 and 6.5 is ideal. When your pH level is in this bracket, your skin can be resistant to harmful bacteria. Cleansers and exfoliators can change the pH level of your skin, leaving it to oily or to dry. However toners level out your pH level, and bring your skin back to where it should be.
Toner should be applied with a cotton ball, or sprayed directly on the face. Leave on for a few minutes to dry before applying moisturizer.
All in all, if you are into skin health, invest in a toner for that even skin tone.
