Nashville Summer 2016 : Sunscreen 101

As we welcome warm weather and longer days in the coming summer months, its also the time that we need to be more vigilant about our skin protection during our fun in the sun!

There are so many sunscreen products available and we don always know what type of sunscreen we need for our skin or activities. What you wear on a daily basis would be different from a day hiking or swimming. We are here to help you pick the best protection for skin this summer!

Sport vs Cosmetic

Sport sunscreen is going to be a sunscreen that is sweat and water resistance and can not be easily removed during activities such as hiking, running, swimming, and other recreational activities.

Cosmetic sunscreen is generally a moisturizer or tinted foundation that is primarily used to improved the skins appearance, correct / even skin tone  are used on the face, hands , or decollete during the day. These products will usually have a lower SPF since they are only intended to be used for short periods of sun exposure.

What form of sunscreen is best?

Sunscreen comes in many forms  from creams/lotions, sticks, and the recently popular sprays.

These can all be great options but some are better than others depending on when and where you are using them.

Creams & Lotions

The original and most popular form of sunscreen. Great to be used for any occasion and anywhere.

  • We do recommend using a face specific sunscreen for the face since they tend to have a higher SPF and lighter application.
  • Lotions and creams can leave a greasy or filmy residue due to the water/ oil base.
  • Easy to apply and see wear you have applied before it soaks in.
  • Comes in both sport and cosmetic forms

Stick sunscreen is best for application to face, hands, nose, lips, ears and feet.

  • Easy to use
  • Portable
  • Comes in both sport and cosmetic forms

The spray on sunscreen is the newest form of sunscreen and has become a fast favorite.

  • Fast and easy application, though it goes on clear and it is easier to miss spots.
  • drys fast and dry. No oily feeling you may experience from creams or sticks.
  • Great for kids
  • Not great during windy weather or at beach. would recommend applying inside if especially breezy out.
  • Mostly a sport suncreen but some cosmetic sunscreens do offer a spray option.

Overall, you have many options of sunscreen no matter what type of protection you need. Be sure to wear some form of sunscreen daily, like we mentioned before many make-ups and moisturizers provide a bit SPF.  Love your skin and have great summer, Nashville!
